Surprisingly Raiders Lock Up Asomugha

It’s unclear the actual terms of the deal, but all we know is that the Raiders have locked up Nnamdi Asomugha for a long time. Contradicting reports put the deal at either a 3-year or 6-year deal; regardless, he’ll be in Oakland next season. For an organization that’s in complete disarray, this was a huge deal that had to be done. It’s hard to believe, but the Raiders actually did something right for once!
Locking Asomugha up is the smartest move the Raiders have made in years

Locking Asomugha up is the smartest move the Raiders have made in years

Asomugha is one of the best defensive backs in the league and easily one of the best overall players in this year’s free agent class. Recent reports had rumored that the Raiders were going to put the franchise tag on him (again), but it looks like both sides avoided another one-year contract and wrapped this thing up for the long haul. I’m sure Nnamdi is glad that he gets something longer than a single season deal—and both reports state that he’s getting a ton of guaranteed money.

While it’s a huge signing for the Raiders, it’s a stomach-punch to all of those teams that were lining up for his services. Asomugha is respected around the league as a guy that shuts down his entire side of the field for the entire game. His stats would be better, but opponents don’t even throw at him anymore. That’s the mark of a great corner. It’s not how many break-ups, interceptions or tackles he has—it’s the fact that the opposition won’t even try to beat him anymore. He has the ability to take any receiver out of the entire game! Just look at the respect that he gets around the league.  Even one of the best receivers in the game sounds like he wants no piece of talented corner.

Just think how valuable that could be to a defense that wants to play an aggressive type style. Since his defensive coordinator never has to give him help, they are free to create an aggressive game plan that brings pressure from all positions. He’s one of those special guys that are SO good, they have the ability to make his teammates better. Considering the problems the Raiders had on the defensive side of the ball last season, just imagine how bad it would have been without the best corner in the league!

Now that Asomugha is off the market, the rest of the NFL can turn their attention to the rest of the cornerbacks that are going to become free agents this offseason. Ron Bartell, Fakhir Brown (both from St. Louis), Ralph Brown (Arizona) and Phillip Buchanon (Tampa Bay) are all set to test the free agent waters and offer their services to the highest bidder. All of these guys are both good and incredibly underrated, but none of them can do what Asomugha does on a game-by-game basis. He’s a superstar that is the center piece to an entire defense—they are guys that simply play defensive back. It’s a subtle difference, but for all the teams looking to fill holes in their secondary, it’s a HUGE difference.

Well, there’s always the draft.

BallHype: hype it up!

Good signing. Now, the Raiders only need another corner, a D-Line, an O-Line, a wide receiver, linebackers, defensive coaches, offensive coaches, and offensive identity, and a defensive identity.

But, with Janikowski, Lechler, and Asomugha they are good for 5 wins this year and last place in the AFC West.

    Go Raiders!

    • Daniel

Yeah, they’re definitley set on kickers.

Its just funny that when Al makes a bad signing (i.e. Hall) he gets criticized but when he signs his 2 pro bowl players he’s gets crap too! I guess when you love to hate a team you cant be objective about it!

        • Daniel

Janikowski is not a pro bowler, he was an All-American

    • The Nation

Haha, thats good. Well unless your a Pittsburgh fan there are 31 other teams that can be picked apart just the same! I mean look at the Cowboys what do they need to win a playoff game? Look at Diego up untill 2 years ago they didnt win a playoff game since they got blown out in ’95! And they are just as talented as the majority of the teams in the NFL.

The Dolphins went from 1 win to 11…. people can criticize all they want, but I’m still grinning– ear to ear baby!

        Don’t you love LOW expectations?

First of all nice article very well written! Finally a little props but dont forget the big lechler signing as well! Only part I dont agree with is “complete dissaray”. Maybe they were a few years ago but I think things are turning around. Past 2 years 4-12, 5-11 respectively but have been leading in 4-5 games in the 4th quarter each season so not that bad. It just shows the youth of the team not able to finish and the D being on the field to much! Complete dissaray would be 1-15, 0-16 and who knows what can happen the next year…could win 11 games or something! But thats just my unbaised opinion. ;)

“Complete” dissaray could be a little harsh. How about “regular” dissaray? Since we’re talking about the Raiders, would that be a compliment?? :-)

      • The Nation

See much better! Regular, normal any of those would work. I think they are on the right track. Just use the blueprint a tradition rich team like the dolphins did and we’ll have 11 wins and be out in the first round too! I”m good with them as long as they dont start blaming the economy (McCourts) for not putting money back into the team!

        • Daniel

If by blueprint, you mean hire a guy like Parcells, then the Chiefs took about the only guy even close in Scott Pioli, it will be a while before anyone like those two is available for anyone else to grab.

Well, I can’t think of a better receiver in the AFC West. Please don’t tell me Vincent Jackson, that’s just the Charger goggles talking! Dwayne Bowe? Maybe next year. And we all know the Raiders don’t have any receivers!!

I’m just pissed that he’s not coming to Miami! I was all ready to have the jersey made– wishful thinking.

    • Daniel

He may be the best “wide” receiver, but Gates and Gonzales are both better receivers

  • Daniel

Brandon Marshall, one the best receivers in the game, really? Catches are not the most imprtant stat, yards, tds, and ypc are the crucial stats. Catching 100 balls out of 200 dosen’t mean s%!* if they are all for about 5 yards or even behind the los, plus he fumbles way to much. But yes, Asomugha is an elite corner and I have no idea why he didn’t just go cash in at Dallas or New England.

    • The Nation

I think cuz he’s a loyal guy that likes being in the Bay (Cal/Raiders). And being the highest paid corner probably doesnt hurt! Pats got $1,000,000,000,000 devoted to 2 QB’s, whether or not they deal one of them is anyone’s guess. And the difference between the Cowboys and Raiders is 5 – 6 more wins a year. And actually the Raiders have won a playoff game more recently and currently have less players that have been arrested! Who would have thought!!I dont know if the under achieving cowboys are that appealing in Big D anymore. Getting 10 wins and having the 24 pick in the draft for the 14 consecutive years I guess is cool…

      • Daniel

Asomugha must think that Raiders are going to turn around soon, he is the only really good player on the team. Burgess is good but not great and that middle linebacker is ok. Russell is still an unknown and he is running out of time, McFadden was a dissapointment, but he might turn it around. If they can get offensive stability they might get to .500 in a season or 2.
