Stoudemire out 8 weeks; Suns outlook blurry

by Matt Reitz on February 20, 2009

The bad news just keeps on coming for the Phoenix Suns. Amare Stoudemire had surgery to repair a detatched retinaand will be out for the next 8 weeks.  After being unable to unload Amare Stoudemire’s contract, it looks like they’ll be playing the rest of the season without him anyway. With Alvin Gentry bringing back D’antoni’s up-tempo style of basketball, this injury will leave the Suns with prehistoric Shaquille O’Neal trying to keep up. What is the over/under on how many times Shaq doesn’t even try to make it up the floor?

stoud-blockThe update about Stoudemire’s eye comes on the heels of news that the Suns are going to have to play a team besides the Clippers. Over the last two games (Alvin Gentry’s first 2 as head coach), the Suns are averaging 141 points per game. The Suns will get to try out their new offense against a real team (Oklahoma City)tonight in Phoenix. That’s right, I just said real team– and I wasn’t bashing the Thunder. If that doesn’t tell you how much the Clippers suck, I don’t know what will.

The worst part of the news is that the Suns were willing to trade Stoudemire, but reports said they were not happy with they assets they were receiving in return. I’m willing to bet that GM Steve Kerr would jump at ANYof those offers this morning.  “You want Amare for an expiring contract, a conditional 2nd and a membership to the Scottsdale Country Club? I’ll call the league offices!”

Oh well, I guess hindsight is always 20/20– apparently Amare Stoudemire is not.

BallHype: hype it up!

That wasn't the first thing I thought of when I heard the term "detacted retina," but I figured the my original thought would have been in poor taste. Well, poorer taste than the 20/20 thing.... ;-)
