It took Terrell Owens 2 days to find a new place to do his thing after he was cut from the Dallas Cowboys. Residents of Buffalo and upstate New York– brace yourselves! In his press conference, the first thing he did was take the time to thank God– which is completely understandable, since we all know that God as a vested stake in him becoming a member of the Buffalo Bills. Here is his introduction to the media as the newest member of the Buffalo Bills:
Just like any other move that involves T.O., this has the potential to be a trainwreck. Keep in mind, this isn’t the first time that Buffalo has been in the national headlines this week. The news of the Owens signing comes on the heels of Marshawn Lynch’s guilty plea to gun charges earlier this week (nevermind the smell of weed that attracted police to Lynch’s car in the first place). All things considered, I guess this is a step in the right direction for the Bills PR department.
I can’t wait to see the first time that Trent Edwards decides to pass the ball to Lee Evans instead of Terrell Owens. I can’t wait until the first 3 game losing streak when T.O. thinks that the team would do better if the offensive coordinator was designing every play to be orchestrated in his direction. But most of all, I can’t wait until he looks back at the Cowboys in the middle of next season and sees that they’re better off without him. You know its coming—and I’m sure he’ll handle it with class, grace and maturity.
The biggest problem is that the Bills have some other pressing needs on their team. With Lee Evans, they already had their #1 game-breaking receiver position taken care of on their lineup. The Bills were 25th in yards per game and 23rd in scoring on their way to their 7-9 record and last place finish. In his press conference, he said he’s here to “put points on the board.” The Bills better hope he brings more points that distractions, or they’ll be hearing a lot of “I told you so” from the rest of the league.
Even Bills fans know that there’s more work to be done before they can be considered a serious contender for the AFC East crown. But hey, you have to give it up to the Bills management. At least they are making this risky move to attempt to change their place in the division. Instead of just sitting back, they are proactively trying to make something happen.
Unfortunately, the Buffalo Bills are a team without a strong leader or powerful team culture that is needed to corral a powerful personality like Owens. It won’t take long before he wears out his welcome in yet another city—but it’s always fun to watch it unfold. As long as he’s not on my team, it works for me! Good luck Bills fans– I have a feeling you’ll need it.
