i think a main factor for detroit being so good at developing prospects is steve yzerman. he passed along knowledge and a team and work ethic to guys like lidstrom datsyuk and zetterberg andf they are passing it along to young guys.
grand rapids was terrible from 06-07- 07-08 when greg ireland was coach and judging by the success the team and players have had before and after he was coach i would have to attribute their lack of success to him.
it is hard to get a good pick at the end of the first round detroit has also traded away a lot of their first rounders but they have still had some recent succes on the first round- niklas kronwall jiri fischer would have been a good one and they have a few prospects that look good from first round like brendon smith
sometimes in detroit young guys just don't get an opportunity because of all the talent on their team and it may slow their development. i think jiri hudler and kyle quincey are perfect recent examples.
nobody is perfect of course and i do believe holland is the best gm i theleague and that detroit certainly is the best in the league at drafting and developing young players but i think people don't realize of how influential steve yzerman is still when it comes to developing young players on the team
