Gross Injustice For Dallas Stars

by Matt Reitz on November 5, 2009

Nicklas_GrossmanDid you catch the end of the Calgary Flames vs. Dallas Stars game? While most of the sports world was watching the overpriced Yankees win their 27th World Series in the overpriced Yankee Stadium, hockey fans were treated to an great game in Calgary. Unfortunately, the great game was marred by a horrible call in overtime that ended up costing the Stars the game.

After blowing the lead with 49 seconds left in regulation, the Stars entered the extra session trying to salvage the second point. Nicklas Grossman cleared the puck on a seemingly harmless looking play only to clear it into the stands. The officials (incorrectly) ruled that the clearing attempt occurred within the Stars zone–the automatic delay-of-game penalty was assessed to Grossman. Seconds later, Jarome Iginla does what he does best.

Here’s video of both the game winning goal and the play that cost the Stars the game.

Its a shame that such an exciting, fact-paced game will be remembered for a missed call in overtime.

Amen Saronoff. You blow a lead in the final minute, you deserve to lose, bottom line.

Two quick things: First off, when you blow a lead in the last minute you don't really deserve to win more often than not. How you lose is secondary to the Stars letting the game get in to OT. In that regard they made as big of a mistake as the refs. Secondly, I could have sworn the league implemented some discretion for the delay of game call allowing a referee to determine intent and make the call accordingly. If they haven't, they should. There's too many of these calls where the puck just slips on the stick or similiar. Lets not have that deciding games, please.
