I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California (Jan 2)

by Matt Reitz on January 2, 2010

“I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California” is a feature that will be posted every Saturday here at the View From My Seats. There are plenty of things going on in the hockey world (and even the sports world); and you know everyone has an opinion. This is a place for some quick hits of the week that was.

I might just be a hockey fan in California, but:

- Anyone that is a fan of good hockey writing should check out Michael Russo’s blog/column Russo’s Rants. Anyone that is a Minnesota Wild fan should already know.

- I like the Winter Classic as much as anyone else—but let’s enjoy it for what it is. Once a year. There’s no need to ruin a good thing by trying to do it more than that.

Can you imagine if Mr. "House of Spears" played hockey?

Can you imagine if Mr. "House of Spears" played hockey?

- If Ndamukong Suh ever laced up the skates, not only would I pay to see it—I would bribe Dean Lombardi to draft him. And no, it doesn’t matter if he knows how to skate.

- Is Dustin Penner really the best forward on the Oilers? And they’re in last place in the Western Conference? Hmmm…

- When your favorite NFL team is eliminated and Fantasy Football is over, can someone please remind me what the point is?

- I don’t think Derek Boogaard even needs a stick when he’s on the ice.

- Who is a better pro prospect? (Taylor) Hall or (John) Wall?

- So the World Junior Championships are in Canada (again). With that team playing all of their games in their home country—they SHOULD win it all. If they don’t, they underachieved.

- As I get older—drinking on New Year’s Eve is starting to feel like “Amateur Hour.” That’s maturity speaking—not alcoholism.

- Dion Phaneuf is an asshat. Maybe more asshaty than Chris Pronger.

- Is college football starting to lose it’s strangle hold on New Years Day? Maybe they shouldn’t have started to spread out all of the important bowl games to the days immediately FOLLOWING New Year’s Day.

- The Phoenix Coyotes are good. No one else is talking about them—so I will. They’re good and people in the West might want to pay attention to them.

- I hear a lot of people complaining that Mike Green shouldn’t have been left off the Canadian Olympic team. But if you add him, who do you take off?

- The Boston Bruins are in 5th place in the Eastern Conference. Would they even make the playoffs in the West?

- Going into New Years Eve, the Kings only had 1 win since December 12th. That’s how you go from 1st place in the Western Conference to tied for the last playoff spot.

- Don’t look now—the Flyers are starting to turn things around. Just imagine what they could do if they ever learned how to actually show up for the ENTIRE regular season.

- I wonder how many fans that are happy about their players making the Olympic team will be complaining that their players are tired in the playoffs.

Can he become the first NHL player to play for all 30 teams?

Can he become the first NHL player to play for all 30 teams?

- I’m not sure Vesa Toskula should ever be allowed to play and I’m not even a Maple Leafs fan. I can just imagine how THEY feel.

- With injuries and so many teams fighting for playoff spots, I’d be shocked if Mathieu Schneider doesn’t find a job before the end of the season.

- It would be a shame if the Thrashers can’t re-sign Ilya Kovalchuk because he’s afraid that the team won’t be there in 10 years. I’m not sure which is worse: that it would be a factor for Kovalchuk or that it’s even an issue. If you don’t want to play in Atlanta—just say so.

- Gary Bettman is a pompous little person that needs to be fired for the good of the game.

It will be great to watch Phoenix Coyotes , i have bought tickets from TicketFront.com looking forward to it.

Mathieu Schneider will be King by the end of Jan. And the real question is imagine how the Flyers would be if they ever went out and got a super star goalie
