If the NHLPA knows whats good for them, they won't file a grievance. Only rare players ever stay with an NHL team for 17 plus years. How boring would the NHL be if every team locked up their best players to lifetime contracts. We wouldn't have the Grezky trade or Heatley or Pronger or Thorton. Cities like Winnipeg can't compete for an NHL team if teams are allowed to circumvent the cap.

That argument works both ways in that Kovy also makes less than he is worth for the first two years of the deal, plus the whole back seven. Whether he will play those years is not something that can be determined at this time. <br>Also to Danielle's very good point, the PA does not want this deal invalidated because the league is trying to close the loophole by circumventing the collective bargaining process. THAT is very bad for all of the players. If they want the loophole closed, that needs to be collectively bargained, not just unilaterally announced to be circumvention and void. This is all about the CBA opening up two years from now...

You wrote ""But like any union, they really should be looking out for the majority of their members. ""<br><br> That statement is simply not true. Unions (good ones) make sure the rules get followed properly. if what the Devil's and Kovi did was legal (it appears to be) then the union should file. Sometimes doing what is right for the members doesn't look so good at the time. The membership voted on this CBA as written. If they don't like what is happening then they need to push their management to make changes next time. However to let the NHL "change" the interpretation of the CBA on the fly is not good stewardship, even if it only hurts ONE GUY. What about other things the NHL might want to "adjust" ... What if it only hurts a few guys that time? How many guys can it help or hurt for the league to unilaterally make adjustments? Anything better than 50/50 or does it need to be more?
