Taking care of our own: CJ Shepard’s hurricane rebuild

We don’t usually ask for much around here. We usually won’t ask for money and we won’t ask for action. But these aren’t “usual” circumstances.

Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock over the last week knows that Hurricane Irene has threatened people’s lives (and livelihood) up and down the East Coast. Unfortunately, the hurricane made its force felt over the weekend rivers broke their banks in New York, reached record levels, and caused destruction for many in its path. One of those people whose life was profoundly affected was our own CJ Shepard. You may know her on Twitter as @Hawgs38, you may know from her Goal Cookies series here on VFMS, and you may know her from her past work on Hockey Independent. For anyone who has come into contact with her, she’s one of the smartest, fair, insightful hockey fans on the planet.

If you ever wanted an example of something horrible happening to a great human being—this is it.

In the wake of this tragedy to one of our own, a fund has been set up over on NHLtweetup.com to help her as she gets back on her feet. You can donate $5 to help—you can donate $100 to help. Any little bit helps. And as an added bonus, any donation will be matched dollar for dollar by a contributor who wishes to remain anonymous. Just imagine the head start we can give her!

If you run a blog, please feel free to grab the widget and tell your readers about CJ’s situation. If you’re on Twitter, retweet a link to your followers. If you’re on Facebook, let your friends and family know about the situation. You never know who may feel the desire to help out a stranger…

Thanks for indulging us—we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled hockey programming in a bit.

Matt Reitz is the Editor-In-Chief here at ViewFromMySeats.com and former NHL Writer for ProHockeyTalk on NBCSports. When he’s not shoving a mic in the face of NHLers or explaining why home teams should wear white, he’s usually trying to figure out what song to play next on his iPod. It’s a never-ending job.
